Astigmatism

Astigmatism

Astigmatism is a condition where the eye’s optical surfaces, such as the cornea or lens, have an irregular shape, preventing light from being properly focused. This condition usually results in blurred or distorted images. Astigmatism can occur alongside myopia (nearsightedness) or hyperopia (farsightedness). The treatment for astigmatism may include the following methods:

1. Glasses or Contact Lenses:

  • Glasses or contact lenses can be specially designed to correct astigmatism.
  • Depending on the degree of astigmatism, a special prescription that includes spherical and cylindrical numbers may be required.

2. Laser Refractive Surgery:

  • Laser refractive surgery procedures, such as TRANS-PRK (Notouch laser), LASIK (Laser-Assisted Subepithelial Keratomileusis), PRK (Photorefractive Keratectomy), and LASEK (Laser Epithelial Keratomileusis), can correct astigmatism by reshaping the irregular surface of the cornea.
  • These procedures can also be used in conjunction with myopia or hyperopia.

3. Astigmatic Contact Lenses:

  • Toric contact lenses are specifically designed to correct astigmatism. These lenses have a special design that provides correction at different degrees.

4. Intraocular Lens Surgery:

  • In cases where astigmatism is significant, surgical interventions such as phakic intraocular lens (IOL) implantation or refractive lens exchange may be considered.
  • These procedures involve the insertion of an additional lens in place of the natural lens.

5. Orthokeratology (Ortho-K):

  • Orthokeratology is a method that temporarily changes the shape of the cornea using specially shaped contact lenses worn overnight.
  • This method can be used to provide clear vision during the day without the need for glasses or lenses.

The treatment for astigmatism is determined based on the individual’s degree of astigmatism, age, overall health condition, and personal preferences. An eye doctor can determine the most suitable treatment option for the individual’s needs. Correcting astigmatism can improve visual clarity and provide eye comfort.
